The Ellsworth Collection: 7 Modern DIY Bow-Ties

The Ellsworth Collection: 7 Modern DIY Bow-Ties

My new collection of DIY bow-ties was inspired by meeting Ellsworth Kelly, and the exhibition of his “Sculptures on the Wall” at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia. Ellsworth Kelly is one of the most prominent and influential artists of the latter half of the 20th century, up to today. Even as he approaches his 90th birthday, Ellsworth continues to create new works; two of the five monumental sculptures in the exhibition were created in the last two years.

As always, you get seven different bow-ties on one yard of soft Cotton Sateen fabric ($27), with easy instructions on making them included right on the fabric. So easy, even a novice seamster can sew them in no time flat. All of my designs are printed digitally onto fabric by Spoonflower (click to order). Preview all of the designs after the jump. (more…)

Bow-tie Briefing

“It’s only human nature to resent being told what to wear, when to wear it, what to eat–”

”Or whether you can wear a bow tie?” chimed in Justice Stevens, who rarely, if ever, wears any other neckwear on the bench.

—from an argument before the Supreme Court about whether Orthodox Jews should be exempt from the military dress code’s ban on indoor hat-wearing, New York Times, January 17, 1986.
